Rotary Group Puts Finishing Touches On New GRACEful Buys
Janice Bird with the Rotary Volunteers
 |
Last weekend, a group of people from the Grapevine Rotary and Your Construction Source teamed up to finish some of the exterior renovations at the new GRACEful Buys. Roy Lange of Your Construction Source coordinated the project and sent us the following message to help acknowledge those who lent a hand.
"We would like to give thanks to all who participated in the community service renovation project on April 9th and 10th for Graceful Buys in Grapevine.
On Friday, April 9th, Spencer Oady, Sales and Design Consultant with Your Construction Source, along with a Ralph Siebert (Project Manager) and Bob Van Dyke with Grapevine Rotary, power washed the west side and back side of the building in preparation for painting on Saturday. Saturday, April 10th, a team gathered at 8:30 a.m. to begin the painting of the outside of the building. The team consisted of Roy Lange and his wife Johnny Sue Reynolds, Mike Detwiller, Kenn & Jonathan Grantham, all with Your Construction Source. Along with Ralph Siebert (Project Manager) Michele and Ken Little, also with the Grapevine Rotary, were a huge a part of helping out with the paint project. A big thank you goes out to Sherwin-Williams Grapevine for donating the paint and supplies for this community project. Also, a special thanks to Jill McIntire, Administrative Manager, with Your Construction Source for her part in organizing this event. We were all very happy to be a part of this community project...it was fun!"

| GRACE Dental Program Off to a Smiling Start! |
GRACE Dental Program Becoming A Reality! "We held our first dental screening Tuesday night the 9th during our regular Acute Care Clinic. Dr. Brian Martin, a local dentist in Grapevine screened over 20 patients in two and a half hours. During the screening process, we uncovered several clients who were in pain and need to have tooth extractions, and many that have cavities that need to be filled. We are now in the process of prioritizing the clients for services and scheduling them to have the work performed. This program is so exciting, and I want to thank everyone involved in helping get it off the ground. More information will be coming in future newsletters about how you can support the program to ensure its continued success", per Amy Holcomb, R.N.

| Holiday Programs Results |
|
Christmas Cottage and Holiday Food Distribution each saw slight increases in the number of families served this year. Holiday Food Baskets were distributed to 515 families at Thanksgiving and 560 for Christmas. Last year, 1060 families received baskets. The estimated value of the food baskets given out is over $75,000! Christmas Cottage faced challenges with getting enough donations to meet this year's need, but when the dust settled some 2,468 individuals were served, including 1,334 children. Volunteers logged more than 3,000 hours in setting up and operating the program this year. Without the support of donors and volunteers, this massive undertaking could not be succesful. The GRACE staff and clients would like to say "Thank You" to everyone who participated!

An additional 10 raised beds will be installed there this Saturday, April 10th, with volunteers from Verizon providing the blood, sweat and cheers.

| Grapevine's First Community Gardens Project - July 2009 |
Fresh is so much better! Keep Grapevine Beautiful (KGVB) is proudly partnering with GRACE to build and maintain Grapevine’s first Community Gardens Project! The goal of this project is to fill the GRACE Food Pantry with fresh produce for GRACE clients. Currently, the cost associated with fresh produce is often not achievable. KGVB enlisted a volunteer group from Sabre Holdings to till and work the soil at a plot at the GRACE food pantry, 837 E. Walnut Street. During the same time, members from Grapevine’s First United Methodist Church and Heritage United Methodist Church in Grapevine were researching and planning to start a garden in Grapevine. These groups came together and formed an advisory committee to move forward with plans to create the 1st GRACE Community Garden, which will encompass four large quadrants. The first garden will begin at the GRACE Food Pantry with plantings in August 2009 for a fall garden. Heritage United Methodist Church will host the second garden, beginning in the spring. This garden will have raised beds with twenty-five quadrants. Individuals, families, and/or groups may adopt and care for any one of these quadrants at either garden. The advisory group is currently in process of recruiting volunteers, soliciting monetary donations and garden supplies to fund this project. Donations needed for both Community Gardens include a large shed, scales for weighing vegetables, compost and monetary donations to assist with water bills, necessary signage and fencing. To assist in this unique project, monetary donations may be mailed to: GRACE, P.O. Box 412, Grapevine, TX. 76099, include a note: Community Gardens on any checks mailed. If an individual or group wishes to adopt-a-garden, please contact Mary Jo Tellin at mjtellin@grapevinetexas.gov or by calling 817 410-3490.
