DFW Connector Project

Overview
The DFW Connector is a Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) project "dedicated to improving mobility along 8.4 miles of State Highway (SH) 114 and SH 121 in a safe, efficient, reliable and environmentally sensitive manner". The $1.02 billion project, to be built without private funds, will rebuild the corridor through Southlake, Grapevine and the north edge of the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport.

The project includes the reconstruction and expansion of 114/121 on the north end of Dallas/Fort Worth Airport, one of the busiest freeways in the region. Other highways in that corridor between Southlake and Irving include Interstate 635, Texas 360, Texas 26 and Farm Roads 2499 and 1709. The project will be funded by $667 million in state highway money, $250 million in federal Recovery Act funding and $107 million in bond funding from Proposition 14, which was approved by Texas voters in 2003 to improve mobility statewide. When the toll express lanes open in 2014, drivers on Texas 114/121 can expect to pay 64 cents for a four-mile trip. Existing lanes will remain free.

Motorists traveling through Grapevine during the $1 billion DFW Connector project probably won't have to worry about navigating closed lanes, at least not during the workweek. The contractor heading up the project has agreed to pay a stiff fee of $8,300 per hour, per lane, in the unlikely event that any lanes must be closed during peak travel periods. Generally, the peak period is 6 am to 8 pm, Monday through Friday. NorthGate Constructors, which last month broke ground on the four-year project, hopes to never pay that so-called lane rental. The free was spelled out in NorthGate's contract with the Texas Transportation Department. Instead, NorthGate plans to limit lane closures to nights and weekends, deputy project director Rob Anderson said. In most cases, NorthGate won't be charged for after-hours lane closures.

"Closures will be needed at times, and these closures will be advertised plenty ahead of time," per Anderson.

1. Westbound SH 114/121 between International Parkway and Texan Trail 8/13/10 - 8/15/10

UPCOMING: All main lanes of westbound SH 114/SH 121 between International Parkway and Texan Trail will be closed from August 13 to August 15 during the following times:

Friday, August 13 at 8 PM to Saturday, August 14 at 11 AM
Saturday, August 14 at 8 PM to Sunday, August 15 at 9 AM
Traffic will be detoured to the SH 114/ SH 121 frontage road at Texan Trail. Lane closures will allow crews to work on drainage across the median. Expect delays when traveling through this area. Click here for an alternate route map.

2. Eastbound SH 114/SH 121 from Main Street to International Parkway 8/20/10 - 8/23/10
8 PM (8/20) to 6 AM (8/23)
UPCOMING: There will be two left lanes closed on eastbound SH 114/SH 121 between Main Street and International Parkway. Lane closures will allow crews to work on walls. At its widest point on eastbound SH 114/SH 121, two lanes will remain open.

3. Westbound SH 114 exit ramp 8/27/10 - 8/30/10
8 PM (8/27) to 6 AM (8/30)
UPCOMING: There will be a full ramp closures on the westbound SH 114 ramp to northbound SH 121 and to southbound International Parkway from 8 PM on August 27 to 6 AM on August 30. Traffic will be rerouted to the Texan Trail frontage road and uniform police will be in place to assist with traffic. Lane closures will allow crews to work on drainage. 4. Mustang Drive east of SH 121 Current 8/13/10, 8/16/10 - 8/20/10
7 AM to 3 PM each day
There will be a single right lane closure on Mustang Drive east of SH 121. This lane closure will allow crews to work on utilities. At its widest point on Mustang Drive, one lane will remain open.

5. Eastbound SH 114 frontage road near William D. Tate Avenue 8/13/10, 8/16/10 - 8/20/10
9 AM to 3 PM each day
There will be a single right lane closure on the eastbound SH 114 frontage road from William D. Tate Avenue to Cross Roads Drive. In addition, the center lane on the William D. Tate bridge will also be closed. This will allow crews to work on utilities. There will be a flagger in place to assist with traffic. At its widest point on the eastbound SH 114 frontage road, one lane will remain open.

6. Eastbound SH 114 from FM 1709 to SH 26 8/15/10 - 8/19/10
8 PM to 6 AM each night
UPCOMING: There will be a single right lane closure on eastbound SH 114 from FM 1709 to SH 26. Lane closures will allow crews to work on detour paving. At its widest point on SH 114, one lane will remain open.

7. Eastbound SH 114 from SH 26 to Main Street 8/15/10 - 8/19/10
8 PM to 6 AM each night
UPCOMING: There will be a single right lane closure on eastbound and westbound SH 114 from SH 26 to Main Street. The eastbound SH 114 on-ramp from SH 26 as well as the eastbound SH 114 exit-ramp to Main Street may also be closed on these nights. Please follow detour signs if ramps are closed. Please check the website daily as ramp schedule may change. Lane closures will allow crews to level dirt. At its widest point on SH 114, one lane will remain open.

8. Eastbound SH 114/SH 121 from Main Street to International Parkway 8/15/10 - 8/20/10, 8/22/10 - 8/27/10
8 PM to 6 AM each night
UPCOMING: There will be various lane closures on eastbound SH 114/SH 121 from west of Main Street to International Parkway. Lane closures will allow crews to work on drainage and level dirt in the median of SH 114/121. At its widest point on eastbound SH 114/SH 121, four lanes will remain open.

9. Eastbound SH 114 to northbound SH 121 ramp 8/15/10 - 8/19/10, 8/22/10 - 8/27/10
